There are tons of plants springing up in the garden right now, here’s a little overview of everything pushing through the mud. 🙂

Bulbs

Of course the most important and exciting thing happening right now is SPRING BULBS!! It’s always exciting to see the hard work of planting in fall pay off, and more exciting knowing some these guys will be multiplying year after year. Unfortunately, I did not know that snowdrops do not bloom the first year if they are planted as bulbs, so we have to wait a bit longer to share those results. But everything else is game! Even my narcissus are beating the odds against the slugs this year. They have taken a hit and are growing slowly, so wish us luck that they reach bloom stage before being eaten to death.

But something that isn’t in danger of being eaten to death is my tulips! I have never grown them before because in Pennsylvania they are too easily chopped off by deer. But I’ve learned my slugs aren’t interested in them and they are close to blooming. My crocus came later than everyone else’s in Glasgow it seems, but they have been so worth it. They turned out to be a very large variety that could be mistaken for short tulips, the white ones especially are so gorgeous. I might just plant a hundred more. Everything else is coming up great in the front garden and I cannot wait to see the masses of iris blooming along the pond.

Roses

For Valentine’s Day this year my lovely husband bought me FOUR David Austin roses!! I have been dreaming of having David Austin’s for years and I am insanely excited to see them in bloom. I have also transplanted the red rose that I have shared before, to the front garden so it can be better appreciated. It was a whole ordeal moving it but it has done astonishingly well and is already showing super strong growth. Also every single cutting I took has taken root. This rose bush has such powerful genetics. It’s planted beside two of the new David Austin varieties and should put on quite a show this summer.

Peonies

Peonies also get their own section because they are so important to me. I wish I could plant a field of them. My Coral Charm peony is coming up so well I can hardly believe how tall it already is. Oddly it only has one stem right now… so I hope some others will be coming up as well. My Anemoniflora next to it is coming up as well, I think that our back patio has a bit of a microclimate that has pushed them ahead a bit. The peonies I planted this past fall, in the front garden, aren’t doing as well. Catharina Fontijn I may have planted too deeply so I had to uncover it a bit, but now it seems to be coming up. If it is too deep in may not bloom this year, but I can readjust it if I need to. Unfortunately, I think my Buckeye Bell may have rotted over the winter. I was most excited for this one so I’m very sad about it. But if it hasn’t survived I will probably try again this fall. I hope I will actually be in the UK when they are blooming this time, but I will be gone for two weeks in May so it will be a close call!

Other Perennials

Plants all over the garden are starting to come back and thank god, because things have been so dreary. Our neighbor has the most stunning camellia shrub and out of jealously I had to get one for myself. The garden center near us had Nuccio’s Cameo which ranged in colors from soft peach to coral. I was so so tempted to go for the soft peach because it isn’t a super common color to see in flowers (as a florist there was so much demand for it, but it wasn’t easy to find). But the Barbie girl in me had to go for the pretty pink and I am so happy I did. There’s a few buds on it for me to enjoy this spring and I hope for many more in years to come.

I won’t go into detail on everything else coming up because there is just so much, it’s so exciting! I’ve also got a few bare root perennials coming in the mail this week to add to the collection. Things are getting busy here and there is something new popping up every day!
