So I took a little bit of a winter “break”… I had intended to do a few Christmas-y posts but it flew by and I missed it. But now that the weather has slightly warmed up and the days are getting longer, of course I quickly got back to my garden work. There really isn’t much I can do this time of year, so without any other option I was forced (by my own self) into the back garden to clean.

state of our back garden this past autumn

I planned on waiting to begin this clean-up in the summer, but since it’s been warm enough and I have the time I thought I might as well start. Of course I love to deep clean and the greenhouse was exactly the kind of project that calls to me. It’s a pretty decent glass house, still standing strong although quite a few panes have fallen out of place and shattered. Absolutely FILLED with garbage and debris. I couldn’t even open the door all the way at first. I filled bag after bag with waste, as I cut through ivy vines that had weaved their way through cracks in the glass. I also amassed a large collection of garden pots, seed trays, and possibly salvageable garden tools. Not only was there broken glass and plastic sprinkled on-top of this trash mountain, but the wooden workbenches that had once lined either side of the house had become completely waterlogged to the point of decomposition, and crumbled as I tried to toss pieces into garbage bags.

It only took a few hours over the span of two days to get it cleaned out. It’s really actually very nice inside, the walkway is in good shape and I’m hoping the rain will wash away some of the dirt from the stones on either side (there are missing panes in the ceiling so water WILL be coming in). We are replacing the small stones in the front garden so my idea is to move them back here and replenish the ones in the greenhouse. Hopefully we can have someone come out and fix/replace the lost glass and it should be in working order by summer!

All of the garbage is now not-so-neatly piled in the garden. I’ve separated the pots and garden tools to one side, to sort through and clean. I’ll never need to buy my own pots or seed trays!! Our two remaining sheds need cleaned out still (one is harboring a mattress-I think the foxes are enjoying that this winter) so the pile will continue to grow for a bit longer. I also put in a few hours clearing the ground in front of the sheds. There are some tenacious vines consuming the buildings and shrubs that have been a ***** to remove. But it’s worth the effort to see things start coming together. So much needs done but it’s going to look amazing when it’s finished! 😊

how our back garden looks now – still a mess but a lot of progress has been made!
